The business stopped. Its operational knowledge may still be useful.
A defunct company data partnership is an arrangement to evaluate and potentially license records from a business that no longer operates. The asset is the documented work: how people solved problems, coordinated projects, followed procedures and reached decisions.
“Defunct” describes the business situation, not a single legal status. An inactive company may still exist. A dissolved entity, an acquired business and a company in an insolvency process can have different people controlling their assets. Establish which situation applies before presenting yourself as the seller.
micro1’s data overview emphasizes historical depth, quality and useful workflow context. An archive that explains a complete process can be easier to evaluate than isolated files. There is no automatic price attached to a closed company or an old workspace.
What does micro1’s closed-company program look for?
micro1 publishes a dedicated defunct-company opportunity. Read its program listing alongside the current referral-page program card: their headcount figures differ.

| Requirement | What the public pages say | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Company status | The program targets businesses no longer operating. | Describe the actual closure and legal status. |
| Headcount | Referral page: 30+ employees. Dedicated listing: 50+ employees at peak. | Ask which threshold and measurement apply now. |
| Records | Dedicated listing requests substantial Slack or Microsoft Teams history, plus deliverables or strategic assets. | Explain what remains available and its coverage. |
| Language and location | Dedicated listing specifies English and the countries below. | Confirm the relevant entity and location are eligible. |
Countries named in the dedicated listing: United States, United Kingdom, Canada, India, Australia, Singapore, Ireland, Netherlands, Germany and France.

Find the next question to resolve.
Choose the facts you know to get a preparation plan. This tool does not approve a company, price its data or send an application. Your selections stay in this tab and are not saved.
Inventory the archive without sending the archive.
Start with a description of what remains and who controls it. Do not upload private records to this directory. Separate the collection’s location from your permission to access, export or license it.
Scroll sideways to read the full table.
| Collection to describe | Context worth recording | Review before sharing |
|---|---|---|
| Work conversations | Dates, channel purpose, linked decisions and follow-through. | Employee information, customer content and private discussions. |
| Project history | Milestones, revisions, task relationships and completed outcomes. | Client ownership, confidentiality and third-party contributions. |
| Procedures and knowledge | Process steps, version dates and how guidance was used. | Authorship, licensed reference materials and restricted content. |
| Business-system records | Field definitions, periods covered and relationships between entries. | Customer commitments, personal information and export limitations. |
For each collection, record its current custodian, storage location, date range, approximate volume, format and known gaps. Add the document that supports ownership or assignment, the proposed approver and any categories to exclude. “Unknown” is more useful than an unsupported assertion.
Download the closed-company inventory template. Use it for descriptions and review notes, not credentials, customer details or the records themselves. The dataset brief builder can turn the reviewed summary into a first discussion document.
The same archive can lead to different next steps.
Illustrative case
A former founder still has a workspace export.
The company’s assets were sold, but the founder has not checked the assignment schedule. The next step is to establish who controls the records and relevant rights—not to promise a license.
After the review
The current rights holder defines a smaller collection.
The responsible team documents the scope, identifies exclusions and authorizes an initial provider discussion. It can now explain a specific opportunity, subject to the buyer’s assessment and agreement.
Fictional planning example. It is not a completed transaction, legal conclusion or evidence of a payout.
That review may narrow the collection substantially or stop the project. Both are useful outcomes. A clear answer prevents spending time on a proposal that the person presenting it cannot authorize.
Move from a reviewed inventory to a defined proposal.
A useful first proposal connects the surviving records, the current rights holder and the questions still open. Keep a dated copy so later discussions use the same scope.
- Confirm status and control. Record the closure date, current entity status, asset transfers and who can approve the discussion.
- Describe the available collection. Include its origin, coverage, formats, useful relationships and known limitations.
- Resolve fit questions. Explain any uncertainty about headcount, geography, language or archive completeness before spending on extensive preparation.
- Review the proposed agreement. Ask about permitted uses, recipients, exclusivity, retention, exclusions, preparation costs and acceptance conditions.
- Deliver only the approved scope. Use the agreed method and keep a record of what was transferred and accepted.
- Track the payment conditions. Identify the contracting party, proper payee, invoice requirements and when payment becomes due.
Registration and a discussion do not create permission to transfer records. Use the licensing-model guide to compare the rights and commercial terms of an actual proposal.
Company compensation and referral rewards are different.
The amount payable for a collection belongs in the actual agreement. Evaluate it alongside the licensed rights, preparation work, deductions and acceptance rules. Do not treat a promotional range as a valuation of your archive, or assume the proceeds belong personally to a former founder.
micro1’s referral page separates company compensation from rewards for introducing a company. It also says registration alone does not earn a referral payout; transferred data must be approved before that payout enters review. Those are referral conditions, not a substitute for the seller’s payment terms.
Data Mining Masters may earn compensation for qualifying referrals made through our registration link. That does not decide your eligibility or the amount a provider offers. Read our commercial disclosure.
Questions former owners ask
Can a company that closed years ago still be considered?
Explain the closure date, the records that remain and who controls them now. Age alone cannot establish fit. The provider must evaluate the collection, and the current rights holder must be able to authorize the proposed use.
What if the company had fewer than 50 employees?
Ask micro1 which of its published thresholds applies. The discrepancy is explained above. Do not change the company’s history to match a form or assume a referral-page figure guarantees acceptance.
What if there is no Slack or Teams archive?
Describe the actual records available and ask whether another opportunity fits. Do not claim to meet the dedicated listing’s communication-history requirement, or obtain records you are not authorized to access.
Can I license records I kept as a former employee?
A personal copy does not establish authority to offer a license. Identify the current rights holder and obtain the necessary review before representing the collection or sharing records.
Should I restore a dissolved company just to apply?
Do not incur that cost solely because a partnership page exists. Have an adviser establish the asset position and available options, then ask the provider whether the proposed collection is worth evaluating.
Does anonymization make every archive eligible?
No. Removing identifying details does not by itself answer who owns the rights, which commitments apply or whether the proposed use is authorized. Agree the review and handling process before any transfer.
